Olympiacos Club of Fans of Piraeus (O.S.F.P.), widely known simply as Olympiacos, is one of the largest and most historic multi-sport clubs in Greece and Europe. Founded on March 10, 1925, in Piraeus, it originated from the merger of two local clubs with the aim of expressing the working-class and popular element of the country’s largest port, standing against the “bourgeoisie” of Athens. Its name was inspired by the Ancient Olympic Games, representing morality, sportsmanship, and the Olympic ideal, while the laurel-crowned adolescent was chosen as its emblem. Its colors are red, symbolizing passion, and white, symbolizing purity.
What makes Olympiacos stand out is not only its long-standing dominance in Greek sports but also its immense success on an international level. It is a true multi-sport club, maintaining competitive departments in football, basketball, volleyball, water polo, handball, athletics, swimming, table tennis, boxing, and many other sports.
In football, which is the club’s flagship, Olympiacos is by far the most successful Greek team, having won nearly 50 Greek Championships. In 2024, it wrote a “golden” page in the history of Greek football, as the men’s team won the European trophy of the UEFA Europa Conference League, while in the same year, the Youth team (U-19) won the UEFA Youth League.
However, the club’s magnitude is also evident in other team sports. In basketball, the men’s team is a traditional European powerhouse, having won 3 EuroLeague trophies (1997, 2012, 2013) and 1 Intercontinental Cup, with continuous appearances in Final Fours. In water polo, both the men’s and women’s teams have been crowned European Champions (LEN Champions League / Euro League) multiple times, while European titles have also been won by the volleyball (Men’s and Women’s), wrestling, and table tennis departments.
Overall, Olympiacos is the most successful Greek club in terms of international titles, being one of the few clubs in Europe to have celebrated European trophies in so many different sports.
Beyond its athletic achievements, Olympiacos (also known by the nickname “Thrylos” or “The Legend”) is a massive social phenomenon. It is the most popular team in Greece, with millions of fans both within the country’s borders and among the Greek diaspora worldwide. The core of its organized supporters is housed in the historic “Gate 7”. Olympiacos is much more than just a team; it is a living organism inextricably linked to the culture of Piraeus, Greek society, and the pinnacle of European sports.
